Technology touches every part of BNP Paribas and underpins every deal we make. Our Technology teams are responsible for designing, developing, implementing, operating and maintaining cutting-edge applications used across the business. Their key objective is to apply expertise in technology to business problems and deliver high-quality, practical solutions. For example, this could mean developing new applications for our trading floors, coding new modelling strategies, commissioning and supporting a new technical platform, or working with colleagues in other functions to develop tools to automate our trade execution.

Background

Athena is the CIB Fixed Income Hadoop platform. It is seen as a strategic opportunity for the investment bank, and has high level sponsorship from both within the business and within the technology department.

Over the last 12 months, IT, research, e-commerce and data office have worked together to run a proof of concept on how Hadoop could be used to understand our customers better and how to improve our market-making and electronic trading capabilities

To achieve this, the project team have sourced customer trade data, customer inquiries, click data, news, research, market data, client information and sales/client phone calls and meetings, and created a Hadoop store with all this information.

Some of the interesting things that we have achieved are:

  • Regression analysis on swap tenors. We found some interesting and unexpected correlations between trading volumes in swap tenors
  • Sentiment analysis. We have built a tool which correlated stock and bond prices to news sentiment

We are seeking a recent graduate to join the team. The new candidate can expect to be performing the below tasks:

  • Liaising with users and quants to understand requirements related to our data platform (Hadoop)
  • Development of scripts within the Hadoop ecosystem. Much of this will be related to sourcing data from other systems
  • Development of code within Hadoop ecosystem. This will typically be related to running automated data analysis
  • Testing and validation of this code
  • Support of batches and other process
  • Support of users (show them how to extract data, show them how to use the Hadoop tools, investigate when things do not work as expected)

Opportunity

The IT team consists of two individuals, a big data industry veteran and a data architect, plus the oversight of the manager of the area. The benefits for this exceptional individual are:

  • Opportunity to work with a talented, highly respected team of IT experts know throughout the industry
  • Role also involves working very closely with quant research
  • The role offers visibility to very senior individuals within the bank (CIO, Head of Research, CDO), due to its unique position as a technology research area within the investment bank, and the level of interest on data within BNP Paribas
  • Big Data is a huge growth area at the moment, with demand far exceeding supply, driving salaries higher and higher

We are looking for a candidate with the following skills/experience:

  • Exceptional programming skills and an aptitude for learning new technologies
  • Passionate about technology
  • Interest in Big Data
