What you’ll do

Successful applicants will support one of a number of different teams across the Compliance department dependent on applicant skills, experience and personal interest. Teams could include: Functions Compliance, Compliance Assurance, Compliance Business Management, Central Compliance or Financial Security.

The key purpose of the Intern role is to assist one of the teams to carry out day to day Compliance activities, processes and projects. Applicants should be able to demonstrate a keen interest in compliance topics and have an understanding of key compliance themes and issues and the UK/EU regulatory framework.

Successful applicants will gain first-hand experience of a large and complex Compliance department which services a number of leading CIB businesses during a time of significant regulatory and industry change.

Key Responsibilities

Provide day-to-day assistance and support to one of the Compliance areas.

Learn about each relevant business and related compliance matters on-the-job

Take on key activities in one of the teams to support key projects and initiatives and “Business as Usual” activities such as; reviews, reporting, MI, policy & procedure updates, data collection attending meetings and training.

Core Activities

Compliance Assurance: The role will reflect the range of activities carried out by the team which includes Compliance Reviews, Compliance Controls and Compliance Risk Assessments. Specific duties will include some of the following:

Assisting the business to complete risk assessment processes including attending meetings, creating documents and liaising with other Compliance teams;

Assisting in analysing the results of risk assessments, preparing reports and presentations to senior Compliance and Business heads;

Assisting with preparing training on risk assessments and updating relevant manuals and procedures; and

Performing compliance review and control testing in specific areas

 

Functions Compliance: The role will reflect the range of activities carried out by the team to support the CIB UK Corporate Functions. Corporate Functions is comprised of a wide and diverse range of activities including Technology, Operations, Finance, Tax, Risk, Procurement, Client Management, HR, Legal, Country Project Office, Brand and Communications. Specific duties will include some of the following:

Assisting the business to adhere to applicable laws and regulations including attending meetings, creating documents and liaising with other Compliance teams;

Assisting in regulatory investigations, preparing reports and presentations to senior Compliance and Business heads;

Assisting with preparing training and updating relevant manuals and procedures; and performing compliance assessments in specific areas

 

Compliance Business Management: The role will reflect a range of transversal activities that impact the entire Compliance department and include updating the Policy and Procedure Framework, reviewing and improving the MI and reporting framework and associated processes and reviewing and updating the Service Level Agreement (SLA) framework. Specific duties will include some of the following:

Review all reporting requirements across the department and help to build a reporting matrix

Review all Compliance policies and procedures including those owned by Group

Review all department SLA’s and design tracker for monitoring

Assist with annual budget and forecast process

 

Central Compliance: The role will work with the Registrations team to log and register staff and to manage the new Certification process. Also to work with the Professional Ethics team to understand and assist with the Compliance issues relating to front office staff and to work on projects in this team. Specific duties will include some of the following:

Assist the team with reporting and audit obligations

Analyse reports and progress checks

Undertake mandatory periodic controls

Update team procedures

 

Financial Security: Financial Security constitutes six sub teams, this role will support one or a number of these teams; Client Testing and Risk Management, Advisory, Controls and Monitoring, Investigations, Sanctions & Payments or Projects and Governance. Specific duties will include some of the following:

Assist the team with reporting and audit obligations

Analyse reports and progress checks

Undertake mandatory periodic controls

Update policies and procedures

Alert management and investigations

 

Projects:

As directed by each of Compliance teams, to contribute to UK, regional or global projects with a view to ensuring that they are delivered effectively and efficiently. This will be dependent on the decision of each team head.

 

Legal and Regulatory Responsibilities:

Maintain appropriate knowledge and Training material to ensure to be fully compliant with rules, regulations and policies. Complete all mandatory training as required to attain and maintain competence.

 

What we are looking for

  • Excellent academic background, predicted minimum 2:1 in Bachelor’s degree (or equivalent)
  • Keen interest in Compliance
  • Basic understanding of Corporate and Investment banking activities and some knowledge of UK/EU Regulators and regulation
  • An inquisitive mind
  • Good at building relationships
  • Analytical thinking and strong attention to detail
  • Fluency in English
